Physical vs. Personality

It is a common belief, that due to evolution, when one is looking for a partner we are preprogrammed to look for a specific person. We are born with genes that desire different characteristics within a person- whether they are tall or short, funny or serious. Could this be? What aspect of a person attracts another individual to want to be with them- physical or personality? Well, according, to scholarly articles read and interviews conducted by, Elisa Macias, Leana Vardanian, Janet Kasabyan, and Julia Toma; when it comes to individual’s looking for a partner and whether they pay attention to one’s personality or physical appearance, it is concluded that women pay more attention to humor, a psychological trait that represents a part of one’s personality, when men display it,  while men pay more attention to an individual’s physical aspect. Although, it is noted that as men are older and looking for a partner, they do look for someone with an attractive personality who can bear children and both sexes do, however, favor looks and humor, that represents in short term relationships but personality in long term relationship.

Annita Kasabyan

Annita reveals her honest opinion on whether she would date someone that look like the individual on the scree and she would, if it meant they had a charming personality.
David is using ASL to sign the word "nice" to express that he is interested in someone who is nice or has a humble way of being. David feels that personality should be valued more than physical.

" I value someone's personality more because in the long run looks come and go and we are just left with their personality."

Andrea Miu

"I favor someone’s personality more than their physical appearance because I have, indeed, met attractive people that have had a very ugly personality which defeats everything else they have going for them. I feel like someone with a nice personality, ups the atmosphere and you just always want to be around them, you don’t dread it."

Lisette Sanchez

According to the article, The Influence of Humor on Desirability by Eric R. Bessler and Sigal Balshine, it asserts that humor is favored by women when men display it yet it is not so much favored by men even if women display it because most do not pay much attention to it. Although, humor is favored by some and not all, those who display it are often seen more as less intelligent and less trustworthy. Humor is a characteristic that is ideal for short term relationships rather than long, but individuals do value other aspects of one’s personality.

According to the article, "Personality More Attractive Than Looks", it claims that men

"[pay] more attention to personality characteristics when relationship stability is important", but "if they want a quick fling they still prefer feminine and youthful partners." In other words, men are interested in personality characeristics when the relationship is at stake, but if they are interested in a short-term relationhsip, someone young and attractive is who they are looking for.

“That is, personality changes little overtime, is determined by internal processes and internal factors, every flicks and individuals distinctive qualities. Personality also can be thought of as unique, relatively stable patterns of behavior, multiple determined over the course of an individual’s life.”  pg.1  The author described the scientific studies on personality, and how it changes over the course of ones life; how we find others attractive through the personaliity traits that are aquired through childhood all the way up to adulthood.
